Laurie always has great ideas for her Waumba space at Athens Church. She's so great at connecting with the kids and being in tune with what they like. So when she told us that she really wanted a BRIDGE in her space, Laura Gross and I really wanted to make it happen. Turns out that creating a bridge that spans an entire hallway isn't exactly kosher in the whole fire/life/exit safety code world… but we were able to make a "bridge" that both the toddlers AND the fire marshal love :)
The base of the bridge is more of a "flooring change" than it is a hump. There is no rise and fall--- just thin planks laid over the LVT flooring and secured. We even had the local flooring company install a rubber transition on either side of the planks to make sure that no one trips over our creation :) The SIDES of the bridge engage a little trompe l'oeil action with an exaggerated hump on either side to offer the whimsical illusion that the bridge arches down the hall with the spokes radiating over the arches.
